The Osun State Police Command has begun a search operation for a driver who fled after allegedly killing two police officers in a hit-and-run crash along the Osogbo–Gbongan Road in Oogi community.
Police spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the incident on Thursday, stating that the officers, identified as Kehinde and Tobi, were riding on a motorcycle when they were struck by a Lexus vehicle on Wednesday.
According to him, the driver of the vehicle escaped immediately after the collision, abandoning the car at the scene.
“The officers were on a motorcycle when the Lexus hit them. The two operatives involved are Kehinde and Tobi,” Ojelabi said.
He added that police have since recovered both the Lexus car and the motorcycle used in the accident and have taken them into custody for investigation.
“We have launched a full investigation into the incident and are tracking down the driver responsible. The vehicles have been recovered and are now in our custody,” he said.
Ojelabi further disclosed that one of the deceased officers had already been laid to rest according to Islamic burial rites.
He assured that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing driver as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
