Owaen Fred Odianosen Itua, a seasoned journalist with 13 years of experience, has shared a shocking tale of discrimination and rejection in his quest for employment.
In a social media post on Monday, Itua revealed that he was denied jobs at Zenith Bank and Unity Bank due to the colour of his skin and “federal character” issues.
Itua’s journey into journalism was unexpected, born out of necessity after facing joblessness and poverty. Despite his family’s banking background, he was unable to secure a job in the industry due to discrimination. “I was rejected by Zenith Bank because I was too dark, and Unity Bank due to federal character,” Itua shared.
However, his entry into journalism proved to be a turning point in his life. He expressed gratitude to colleagues who played a crucial role in his transition to the field, saying, “I settled for journalism because I had no other choice. Looking back, it was the best decision of my life.”

Itua’s journey in journalism has been marked by both triumph and hardship. He acknowledged the support of colleagues like Soni Daniel, Ibanga Isine, and Iheanacho Nwosu, who helped him grow from a rookie reporter to a respected journalist. He also recognized the impact of his brother Martins Itua and colleagues Stephen Kayode, Abdulmumin S. Balogun, and Iyobosa Uwugiaren, who contributed to his growth in the profession.
Despite facing numerous challenges, including undermining by friends and colleagues, Itua remains resilient. “I have won awards and derailed. I have been undermined by friends and colleagues; hated, too, and I know it. But I don’t give a f^ck. People will always hate, and I wish them well,” Itua stated.
In a hint at future revelations, Itua stated, “Someday, I will narrate my full story… The book will be very revealing. There will be no holds barred.” As he looks to the future, Itua expressed appreciation for his colleagues, saying, “To the good and bad friends I have met during my journey, thank you… The next 13 years, hopefully, will be remarkable.”
