Ignore Rumours of Bandit Attacks, Niger Govt Tells Residents

The Niger State Government has urged citizens not to panic over reports claiming that bandits invaded parts of the state, describing the information as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Obed Nana, assured residents that the state remains peaceful and secure. He stressed that schools across Niger State are safe and that teaching and learning activities should continue without interruption.

His clarification followed widespread reports alleging that bandits had attacked schools in Minna and nearby communities, kidnapping pupils, students, and teachers. The reports triggered fear among parents and school authorities, leading some institutions to shut down temporarily while students and staff were hurriedly sent home.

According to Nana, investigations carried out with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the Niger State Police Command, and other security agencies found no evidence that such attacks occurred.

He explained that the rumours, which circulated on several social media platforms, falsely claimed that schools in Bosso, Kpakungu, Sabon-Wuse, Lambata, and other areas had been invaded by bandits. He said security assessments and independent verification confirmed that the allegations were baseless and intended to spread panic among residents.

The commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting students, teachers, and school communities. He noted that authorities are working closely with security agencies, school administrators, community leaders, and other stakeholders to strengthen security measures around educational institutions throughout the state.

He therefore advised parents and guardians to remain calm and continue sending their children to school, assuring them that adequate arrangements have been made to safeguard lives and property.

Meanwhile, the Niger State Commissioner of Police, Adamu Elleman, has instructed Divisional Police Officers across the state to collaborate with school authorities as part of ongoing school protection initiatives. He also directed officers to intensify visibility patrols around schools and surrounding communities to enhance security.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, disclosed that members of the public have also been provided with emergency contact numbers to report suspicious movements or any security concerns for prompt action by the command.
