The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the fatal incident in Effurun, Delta State, in which a suspect, Mene Ogidi, was killed, and has ordered a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the case.
According to reports, operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command acted on credible intelligence from the Benin Motor Park along the Warri Sapele Expressway after members of a transport union apprehended a suspect who allegedly attempted to send a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
The suspect was subsequently handed over to police operatives for lawful custody. However, during the process of taking him into custody, the team leader, Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in violation of operational guidelines, resulting in the suspect’s death.
In a statement issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Okon, Force Public Relations Officer, the police leadership directed the immediate transfer of the officer and members of his team to Force Headquarters in Abuja.
They are expected to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for investigation, disciplinary action, and possible prosecution.
The statement also noted that the Inspector General of Police has expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that justice will be served in accordance with the law.
Members of the public were urged to remain calm and law abiding as the disciplinary and legal processes continue.
The Force reiterated its zero tolerance for extrajudicial actions, abuse of authority, and any conduct capable of undermining public trust, stressing its commitment to accountability and professionalism in policing.
