Senator Rufai Hanga, representing Kano Central Senatorial District, has resigned his membership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), alleging that actions linked to the party’s vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, contributed to his decision.
Mr Hanga announced his exit in a resignation letter addressed to the chairman of the NDC in Dakata Ward, Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, stating that his withdrawal from the party took effect on Monday, August 3, 2026.
The senator said his decision followed “careful reflection and personal deliberation,” adding that he was leaving the party to focus on other commitments and pursue a new political direction.
He appreciated the ward leadership and members for their support and cooperation during his time with the party, noting that he valued the relationships and experiences gained through their political engagements.
Mr Hanga also requested that his name be removed from the party’s membership register at the ward level.
His resignation follows reports of growing dissatisfaction within the NDC after allegations that Kwankwaso allocated the 40 Kano State House of Assembly tickets to his loyalists, a development said to have caused tension among some party members in the North-West.
