Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, in Kano State, has called off a planned excursion to New Bussa in Niger State over fears about insecurity in the area.
The institution explained that the decision followed concerns raised by parents and other stakeholders regarding the safety of students scheduled to participate in the compulsory eight-week field exercise for 400-level Fisheries students.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Deputy Registrar for Information and Public Affairs, Abdullahi Datti Abdullahi, the university disclosed that the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Musa Tukur Yakasai, had already opposed the proposed trip before public reactions escalated.
According to the statement, the Vice Chancellor rejected the New Bussa location after reviewing reports on the security situation in the area and instructed the Department of Fisheries to find a safer alternative.
The university subsequently approved Tiga Dam in Kano State as the new venue for the academic exercise.
“The students will now undertake the mandatory training at Tiga Dam in Kano State,” the statement noted.
The management maintained that protecting students remains a key priority both on and off campus, assuring parents that no student would be taken to an unsafe environment.
Abdullahi further appealed to parents and guardians not to panic, stressing that the institution had no intention of sending students to New Bussa or any other location facing security threats.
The clarification came after reports that some parents opposed the proposed trip involving over 30 students due to ongoing insecurity in parts of Niger State.
