Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan, has denounced the reported assassination attempt on former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun in Edo State, yesterday. She described the incident as “deeply disturbing” and an affront to democracy.

In a social media post, the fiery lawmaker stated, “I strongly condemn the reported assassination attempt on former Governor of Anambra state Peter Obi and former National Chairman of the APC, John Odigie-Oyegun, in Edo State,” Senator Uduaghan stated. “This development is deeply disturbing and has no place in our democracy.”
The Senator emphasised that politics should not descend into violence or intimidation, highlighting the importance of healthy competition and free expression in a democratic system.

“Politics must never descend into violence, intimidation, or threats against perceived opponents,” she said. “Democracy thrives on healthy competition, free expression, and the protection of dissenting voices.”
Senator Uduaghan expressed concern over overzealous political actors who may engage in harassment or attacks on opposition members, calling such actions “reckless, counterproductive, and dangerous to our national unity.”
“The opposition has every constitutional right to organise, mobilise, and carry out political activities without fear,” she stressed. “Attempts to silence or endanger them undermine the very foundation of our democratic system.”
The Senator has called for a thorough investigation into the incident, urging security agencies to hold those responsible accountable.
“I call on security agencies to thoroughly investigate this incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable,” she said. “Nigeria must remain a nation where political differences are resolved through dialogue and the ballot…not through violence.”
Senator Uduaghan reaffirmed her commitment to defending democratic principles, the rule of law, and the safety of all Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation.
“As a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I remain committed to defending democratic principles, the rule of law, and the safety of all Nigerians, regardless of political affiliation,” she concluded.
