The Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced two men, Ugwuja Kingsley Ejiofor and Okon Joe Christopher, after finding them guilty of trafficking cannabis.

‎Justice Musa Kakaki delivered the judgment following the defendants’ guilty pleas to separate charges filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

‎Ejiofor faced a two-count charge involving conspiracy and the illegal importation of 56 kilogrammes of cannabis, while Christopher was prosecuted for unlawfully dealing in 2.6 kilogrammes of the substance.

‎According to NDLEA prosecutor Peter Ekuri, Ejiofor collaborated with an accomplice who remains at large to bring the prohibited drug from Accra, Ghana, into Nigeria on February 19, 2026. He was also accused of importing the narcotic without lawful authorisation.

‎Christopher, 37, was arrested on May 30, 2026, in the Ladipo Canal area of Mushin, Lagos, where he was allegedly caught dealing in 2.6 kilogrammes of cannabis.
‎
‎During the proceedings, both defendants admitted to the offences. Following their pleas, the prosecution presented evidence before urging the court to convict and sentence them in line with the law.
‎
‎Defence lawyers G.U. Okaka and Chief Lilian Omotunde appealed for leniency, arguing that the convicts had no prior criminal records and were first-time offenders.
‎
‎In his ruling, Justice Kakaki sentenced Ejiofor to two years imprisonment on each count, with the option of paying a N10 million fine. Christopher received a four-month jail term, with an alternative fine of N300,000.
‎
‎The court noted that the penalties imposed were in accordance with the provisions of the NDLEA Act under which the defendants were prosecuted.
