The Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court sitting in Ikeja has ordered the remand of the Vice-President of the Nigerian American Football Association (NAFA), Oluwaseye Obatolu, over allegations of sexual assault brought against him by the Lagos State Government.
According to certified court records, Justice Rahman Oshodi issued the remand order on 12 May, directing that the defendant be held in a correctional facility pending further proceedings.
The order followed Obatolu’s arraignment, which marked the third attempt by the prosecution to bring him before the court after he allegedly failed to appear on two prior occasions.
The judge subsequently ruled that the defendant remain in custody until the hearing of his bail application, scheduled for 17 June.
Obatolu is facing a one-count charge of sexual assault by penetration, contrary to Section 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Under the law, sexual assault by penetration includes non-penile penetration and carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment upon conviction.
Court documents in case number ID/27718C/2026, filed on 2 February, allege that the offence occurred on 24 April 2024 at the Digital Bridge Institute in Oshodi, Lagos.
The charge states that:“Oluwaseye David Obatolu (M), on or about the 24th day of April 2024, at Digital Bridge Institute, Oshodi, Lagos State, in the Ikeja Judicial Division, sexually assaulted Oluwapelumi Ojo (F) by inserting his fingers inside her vagina.”
The prosecution is led by the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions, signed by Director Babajide Martins on behalf of the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.
Beyond the courtroom, Obatolu serves as Vice-President of NAFA, an organisation established in 2019 to develop and regulate American football in Nigeria.
NAFA, according to its official platform, promotes both contact and non-contact American football, while also focusing on grassroots development, youth engagement, and the creation of competitive leagues across the country.
The association also highlights broader objectives including gender inclusion, education, health awareness, and economic empowerment through sport, under its “HUDDLE” values, Health, Unity, Diversity, Development, Livelihood and Entertainment.
Obatolu has previously represented the organisation at sports development events and tournaments. In 2025, he spoke about efforts to assemble a competitive Nigerian team ahead of continental flag football competitions.
The case has attracted additional attention due to NAFA’s recent public advocacy on safeguarding and consent in sports environments. In April 2026, the organisation hosted an awareness programme focused on sexual assault prevention and consent education within professional spaces.
Meanwhile, the proceedings reflect a broader trend in Lagos courts, where defendants in sexual offence cases are often remanded pending bail hearings and legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
The matter is adjourned to 17 June for hearing of the bail application.
