The National Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate for the 2027 Lagos State election, Funsho Doherty, has appealed to residents of the state to vote for competent and trustworthy candidates in the next general election, urging them not to be influenced by financial inducements or other short-term benefits.
Mr Doherty made the appeal on Sunday during the 40th anniversary celebration of St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church in Surulere, Lagos, themed “Strong, Courageous and Committed.”
According to him, the 2027 election presents Lagosians with an important opportunity to determine the future direction of the state through responsible and informed voting.
He encouraged eligible voters to carefully assess candidates based on their integrity, competence and commitment to serving the public rather than accepting temporary incentives.
Mr Doherty stressed that electoral decisions should be guided by the long-term interests of Lagos and not immediate personal gains. He noted that a single political party has governed the state for more than two decades, arguing that democracy is strengthened through competition, accountability and the availability of alternative leadership options.
The NDC candidate also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct transparent and credible elections, insisting that every valid vote must count and that the wishes of the electorate should be respected.
Speaking on his plans for the state, Mr Doherty promised that an NDC administration would focus on improving infrastructure, healthcare, education and the economy while implementing policies aimed at improving residents’ standard of living.
He further pledged to modernise healthcare services, enhance public transportation, strengthen security, promote small and medium-sized businesses and expand programmes that empower young people.
According to him, priority would be given to sectors such as healthcare, education, transport and employment, while efforts would also be made to build stronger public institutions capable of delivering quality services across the state.
Also addressing the congregation, the Vicar and Archdeacon of St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, Chidi Ukachukwu, urged political leaders and aspiring office holders to demonstrate courage, integrity and selfless service in leadership.
He said the church’s anniversary theme highlighted the importance of faith-driven leadership that places the welfare of citizens above personal ambitions.
Mr Ukachukwu also encouraged Christians to continue praying for Nigeria and to participate peacefully in the nation’s democratic process before, during and after the 2027 general election.
He urged Nigerians not to lose hope despite the country’s economic and social challenges, expressing confidence that responsible leadership, accountability and collective commitment would help the nation achieve lasting peace and development.
