A student of Lagos State University (LASU) has died after sustaining injuries during an armed robbery incident in the Iba area of Lagos State.
The deceased, identified as Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, was a 300-level student of the Department of History and International Studies, Faculty of Arts.
According to the university management, the attack happened off campus on the night of May 29, 2026, when the student and some of his friends were reportedly assaulted by armed robbers.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Acting Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Mr. Olaniyi Jeariogbe, LASU expressed deep sadness over the incident.
The university explained that it was immediately informed after the attack and quickly activated its response mechanism. The Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, was said to have provided support, kept the Vice-Chancellor updated, and maintained communication with medical personnel throughout the student’s treatment.
Despite medical efforts, Otabor died on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.
Following his death, university officials visited his family, as well as representatives of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and security agencies.
LASU also stated that it is working closely with law enforcement authorities to ensure a full investigation into the incident and the prosecution of those responsible.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, extended condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and the university community, describing the loss as painful.
The institution further prayed for the repose of the deceased and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring justice is served.
