Lawan Muhammad Sani Emerges 17th Emir of Gumel

Dr Lawan Ahmad Muhammad Sani has been appointed the 17th Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State, succeeding his late father, Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II.

‎

‎The appointment was approved by Governor Umar Namadi following the recommendation of the Gumel Emirate Council kingmakers and the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs.

‎

‎Until his appointment, the new monarch held the traditional title of Chiroman Gumel. His emergence follows the death of his father on September 3, 2026, after almost 46 years on the throne.

‎

‎The succession process involved consultations among the relevant traditional authorities, with the Gumel Emirate Council kingmakers taking the lead. The process was chaired by the Wazirin Gumel, Adamu Muhammad Nasoro, while the Emirs of Hadejia, Kazaure, Ringim and Dutse participated as members of the state Council of Chiefs.

‎

‎Dr Lawan brings a combination of traditional heritage, technological expertise and public service experience to the throne. Before becoming emir, he served as Director of Cybersecurity at the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), where he worked on cybersecurity programmes and initiatives.

‎

‎His appointment marks a generational change in the leadership of the Gumel Emirate after the remarkably long reign of his father.

‎

‎Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II became emir in 1980 and ruled for nearly five decades. His reign was marked by the continued prominence of the Gumel traditional institution in preserving cultural heritage, promoting community unity and providing traditional leadership within Jigawa State.

‎

‎The new emir is now expected to lead the ancient emirate into a new era while balancing the responsibilities of traditional authority with contemporary issues, including education, technology, development and social cohesion.

‎

‎The Jigawa State Government congratulated Dr Lawan on his appointment and expressed confidence that his reign would promote peace, unity and development across the emirate.

‎

‎The government also urged the new monarch to build on the achievements and legacy of his predecessor while providing effective leadership to the people.
