ABUJA, Nigeria – In a scathing open letter, prominent lawyer Chief J.S. Okutepa SAN has accused newly inaugurated Kogi State Governor, Usman Ahmed Ododo, of deliberately undermining the Ata Igala, the paramount ruler of the Igala people and president of the Kogi State Council of Chiefs.
The controversy stems from Governor Ododo’s inaugural address on January 27th, 2024, where he acknowledged the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, the Ata Igala’s vice, before addressing the Ata himself. Chief Okutepa views this as a “sacrilegious” and “disgraceful” act, suggesting it signifies Governor Ododo’s “hatred for the Igala race.”
Okutepa highlights the historical significance and reverence associated with the Ata Igala stool, emphasizing the Igalas’ position as the majority tribe in the state. He criticizes Governor Ododo’s attempt to justify his actions by claiming forgetfulness, stating that “no sensible human being” would believe such an excuse.
The letter serves as a strong warning to Governor Ododo, emphasizing that the Igala people will no longer tolerate disrespect towards their royal father. It references the “audacity of arrogance” displayed by the previous administration under Yahaya Bello and suggests that Governor Ododo is following a similar path.
Chief Okutepa urges Governor Ododo to learn from the past and avoid further antagonizing the Igala community. He concludes by offering “professional respect” while warning against testing the “willpower of the Igala people” through continued disrespect.
This incident raises concerns about potential ethnic tensions within Kogi State. Governor Ododo’s response to Chief Okutepa’s accusations and the overall handling of the situation will be crucial in determining the future of inter-ethnic relations in the state. Open communication, dialogue, and cultural sensitivity are essential to prevent further escalation and promote harmony within the diverse communities of Kogi State.
It is important to note that this news story is based on the open letter from Chief Okutepa and does not include Governor Ododo’s perspective or any official response from his office. As the situation unfolds, further updates and additional information may emerge.
