Liverpool and Celtic legend Sir Kenny Dalglish has confirmed that he is currently receiving treatment for cancer, disclosing the development in a personal statement shared on social media.
The 75-year-old football great explained that the news was not originally intended for public release but became known following an accidental post linked to his mobile phone use.
According to BBC Sport on Tuesday, Dalglish said he was already undergoing treatment and noted that his recovery process has been progressing positively.
He expressed regret over the unintended disclosure, stressing that he would have preferred to keep the matter private.
“In an ideal situation, this would have remained out of the public eye, but my poor handling of technology has brought it into the open,” he stated, adding that he wished for privacy for both himself and his family.
Dalglish also took time to commend the medical professionals handling his care, describing them as dedicated and highly professional in their work with patients.
He said their support had been exceptional, not only in his case but for many others under their care, adding that they deserve recognition for their commitment.
Widely regarded as one of Britain’s greatest football figures, Dalglish scored 167 goals in 320 appearances for Celtic between 1969 and 1977 before moving to Liverpool, where he became a club legend with 515 appearances.
He also represented Scotland, scoring 30 goals in 102 international matches.
Following the announcement, Liverpool Football Club issued a statement expressing solidarity with their former player and manager, describing him as an enduring figure in the club’s history.
The club said its thoughts and support remain with Dalglish and his family, while also respecting his request for privacy as he continues treatment.
