Michelle Obama has finally addressed the swirling divorce rumours surrounding her 32-year marriage to former President Barack Obama.
In a candid conversation with Sophia Bush on her iHeart Radio podcast “Work in Progress,” Michelle set the record straight, attributing the speculation to people’s inability to accept her making choices for herself.
“That’s the thing that we as women struggle with — disappointing people,” Michelle explained. “I mean, so much so that this year people couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself. That they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.” She emphasized that societal expectations often lead people to label women’s independent decisions as “negative and horrible”.
Michelle’s comments come after Barack also addressed their marriage during a chat at Hamilton College, where he mentioned being “in a deep deficit with my wife” due to his busy presidential schedule. He joked about trying to “dig myself out of that hole by doing occasionally fun things”.
The former First Lady’s remarks aim to dispel the rumours, focusing on her personal growth and newfound freedom since leaving the White House. “It’s whatever I want, Sophia. It’s whatever I want. It’s the first time in my life all of my choices are for me,” she stated, highlighting her journey toward self-discovery.
