South Africa kicked off their Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 2–1 victory over Angola, courtesy of a late strike by Lyle Foster.
The second matchday fixtures saw Bafana Bafana take on Angola in their AFCON opener, with both teams determined to secure a win.
South Africa started the match with a high level of control and posed a tough challenge for Angola.
With 20 minutes gone, Bafana Bafana opened the scoring through Oswin Appollis, whose well-taken finish found the bottom corner of the net after an assist from Burnley striker Lyle Foster.
Angola responded after missing several chances and levelled the game before the break to make it 1–1, with Show scoring from a set-piece situation that found the young midfielder.
After the first half, Hugo Broos made a change, introducing forward Tshepeng Moremi for Mohau Nkota. Minutes after coming on, Moremi scored, but his goal was later disallowed following a VAR review, allowing Angola to remain in the contest.
Bafana Bafana continued to push forward, determined to break the deadlock despite several missed opportunities and saves by the Angolan goalkeeper. The breakthrough eventually came when Lyle Foster sealed the win with a brilliant strike from outside the 18-yard area, assisted by Moremi.
The victory seals Hugo Broos’s first win of the tournament and sets up a major clash against seven-time champions Egypt on Friday. Meanwhile, Angola will face Zimbabwe next Friday.
