Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, has called on students across the country to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for a second term, arguing that continuity is essential to consolidate ongoing reforms in the education sector.
Speaking during the 45th anniversary celebration of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Abuja, Senator Barau commended the current administration’s efforts to address long-standing challenges in education and youth development.
He urged students to “reciprocate” the government’s initiatives by backing President Tinubu’s re-election, pointing to programs such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which he said is expanding access to higher education and reducing financial barriers for learners.
Barau also highlighted other policy measures, including the establishment of new tertiary institutions, improved engagement with academic unions, and steps taken to stabilize the academic calendar—moves aimed at ensuring timely graduation.
Describing education as a cornerstone of national transformation, the lawmaker stressed the importance of equipping young Nigerians not only with academic qualifications but also with practical skills, innovation, and entrepreneurial capacity.
He further called on student leaders to embrace responsible activism and collaborate with government efforts to foster unity, stability, and inclusive growth. The 45th anniversary, he added, should serve as an opportunity for students to recommit to nation-building.
