By Adebayo Gbeja

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), FCT Command, has honoured a female inmate, Hajiya Mariam Suleiman, for her exemplary conduct, exceptional dedication to vocational activities and positive contribution to inmate reformation programmes.

The command’s Controller of Corrections, Christopher Jen,  presented the award to her, at the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Suleja, on Friday.

Jen said that the recognition was in line with the service’s commitment to rewarding industry, discipline and rehabilitation among inmates.

According to him, the inmate distinguished herself through outstanding commitment to vocational activities and positive influence on fellow inmates within the custodial centre.

He described the award as part of the NCoS broader rehabilitation and reintegration strategy.

“This gesture is aimed at motivating inmates to remain focused on reformation and personal development while preparing for successful reintegration into society,” he said.

The controller encouraged other inmates to embrace good behaviour, vocational training and self-development programmes, assuring them that the service would continue to recognise and reward positive transformation.

Also speaking, the Officer-in-Charge of MSCC Suleja, ACC Sunday Ejeh, commended the awardee for her discipline, dedication and exemplary conduct.

Ejeh said that the NCoS remained committed not only to secure custody of inmates but also to their rehabilitation and reformation through education, vocational training and behavioural correction.

“This recognition demonstrates that diligence, productivity and good conduct are valued and rewarded within the correctional system,” he said.

The Head of Industries, Female Wing, DSC Rita Micheal, said the inmate had consistently demonstrated exceptional productivity, commitment and skill.

Micheal added that the awardee had contributed significantly to the industrial output of the custodial centre through her active participation in vocational activities.

Responding, the awardee expressed gratitude to the correctional authorities for the honour bestowed on her, describing the recognition as a source of hope, encouragement and renewed determination.

“This award has inspired me to continue striving for a better and more meaningful life,” she said.

She pledged to sustain her good conduct and expressed her desire to support inmates after her release through humanitarian and non-governmental initiatives aimed at promoting rehabilitation and positive living.
