The National Council for Women Societies (NCWS) has joined forces with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to commemorate the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
This year’s theme, “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention,” highlights the need for decisive action in addressing the scourge of drug abuse.
“Drug abuse is not merely a personal failing or a moral lapse; it is a complex social issue that affects individuals, families, and entire communities,” said Mrs. Geraldine Ita Etuk, Acting National President of NCWS.
“The consequences of drug abuse are far-reaching and multifaceted, manifesting in health crises, broken families, increased crime rates, and substantial economic burdens.”
According to the UNODC, over 35 million people worldwide suffer from drug use disorders. Mrs. Etuk emphasised that prevention is key, citing research that consistently shows that preventive measures can significantly reduce drug abuse and its associated harms.
The NCWS called for increased investment in prevention strategies, including education and community engagement, policy, and law enforcement. “Prevention starts with education,” Mrs. Etuk noted. “By providing our children and young people with accurate information about the dangers of drug abuse, we can empower them to make informed choices.”
The organisation is committed to advocating for policies that support prevention, championing educational initiatives, and strengthening communities. Mrs. Etuk urged the government, businesses, educators, healthcare professionals, and citizens to join forces in building a society where prevention is prioritized.
“Together, we can create a brighter, safer future for all,” she said.
