Abuja– The Nigerian government has announced plans to repatriate more than 1,000 of its citizens from South Africa as tensions over immigration escalate in the country.
According to TRT Afrika, “Nigeria says it plans to repatriate more than 1,000 of its nationals from South Africa as anti-immigrant tensions rise in the country.” The move comes amid growing reports of xenophobic attacks and protests targeting foreign nationals in several South African provinces.
Officials said the repatriation is voluntary and will be coordinated with South African authorities to ensure the safe return of affected Nigerians. Consular staff in Pretoria and Johannesburg have been directed to register citizens willing to return and provide assistance with travel documentation.
Anti-immigrant sentiment in South Africa has flared in recent months, driven by concerns over unemployment, crime, and competition for jobs and services. Nigerians, who form one of the largest African immigrant communities there, have often been caught up in the violence.
The Nigerian government said it remains committed to protecting its citizens abroad and will continue diplomatic engagement with Pretoria to address the underlying causes of the tensions. It also urged Nigerians in South Africa to remain calm, avoid confrontations, and follow safety advisories from the High Commission.
The repatriation process is expected to begin in phases, with priority given to vulnerable groups including women, children, and those directly affected by recent unrest.
