Nigeria’s para badminton team delivered an impressive performance at the 2026 Uganda Para Badminton International Championship, winning 14 medals, including nine gold and five silver medals.
The tournament, which took place in Uganda from July 7 to July 12, further highlighted Nigeria’s growing dominance in para badminton on the African continent.
Lyka Brown emerged as one of the country’s top performers, securing gold in the WH1 Women’s Singles before joining forces with Ijeoma Gift to win the WH1 and WH2 Women’s Doubles event. Gift also added another gold medal after triumphing in the WH2 Women’s Singles category.
In the men’s wheelchair events, Emmanuel Ohaeri won gold in the WH2 Men’s Singles and partnered Brown to clinch victory in the WH1 and WH2 Mixed Doubles. He also teamed up with Ekeoma Samuel to earn silver in the WH1 and WH2 Men’s Doubles competition.
Samuel added more medals to Nigeria’s tally with silver in the WH1 Men’s Singles and another silver alongside Gift in the WH1 and WH2 Mixed Doubles.
Nigeria’s standing category athletes also produced remarkable results. Obinna Nwosu claimed gold in the SL3 Men’s Singles, while Eze Chukwuebuka won silver in the same category. The duo later secured another silver medal in the SL3 and SU5 Men’s Doubles event.
Nnanna Chigozie continued Nigeria’s strong showing by winning gold in the SL4 Men’s Singles and partnering Chukwuebuka to another gold medal in the SL3 and SU5 Men’s Doubles. Eneojo Agada completed Nigeria’s gold medal haul with a victory in the SU5 Men’s Singles.
Reacting to the achievement, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih, praised the athletes for their outstanding performance, saying the result had further boosted Nigeria’s reputation ahead of future international competitions.
Orbih said the federation remained committed to supporting para badminton athletes and providing them with the resources needed to succeed.
He added that the federation’s long-term ambition was to qualify more athletes for the Paralympic Games and build on the success achieved by stars such as Eniola Bolaji.
The federation president also expressed appreciation to sponsors, particularly the Abia State Government, Bayelsa State Government and Police College Badminton Club Lagos, for their support in funding the team’s participation. He encouraged more organisations to partner with the federation in developing the sport.
