Nigeria’s electricity grid has collapsed again, leading to disruption in supply to consumers of the essential commodity by distribution companies (DisCos).
According to reports, the grid collapsed around 2:42 am on Monday, with generation dropping to 64.70 megawatts (MWs).
Data from the Independent System Operator (ISO), a branch of the Transmission Company of Nigeria has shown that only one generation company, Ibom Power, was active.
This is coming barely two weeks, Thursday, 28 March to be precise, after the grid suffered what the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) described as grid disturbance, leading to blackout in most part of the country as confirmed by DisCos who took to their social media pages to appeal to their customers for patience and understanding.
As at 8am on Monday, it was learnt, the latest data from the ISO showed that the grid is currently generating 266.50mw of electricity from Okpai, Geregu, and Ibom power.
Confirming this latest collapse, Jos DisCo in a statement by its head, Corporate Affairs, Dr Friday Adakole Elijah, said: “The current outage being experienced within our franchise states is a result of loss of power supply from the national grid. The loss of power supply from the national grid occurred in the early hours at about 0242Hours of today, Monday, 15th April 2024, hence the loss of power supply on all our feeders.”
This collapse makes it the fourth time the grid is collapsing in five months.
The SUMMIT POST reported a system collapse that occurred on 12 December, 2023, leading to a crash in power generation from 4,032.8MW to 43.5MW the preceding day, and on 4th February, 2024.
With this and other prevailing challenges across the entire power value chain which have kept available power hovering around 3,500 to 4,500 megawatts averagely, industry watchers believe that the sector is grossly underperforming in defiance of several critical reform measures so far undertaken, especially given the assurance by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Renewed Hope administration upon coming on board that it would do everything possible to turn around the critical sector for the good of all Nigerians.
