Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong of Cross River South has dismissed as false reports circulating online that claimed a fatal crash along the Calabar-Itu highway killed 17 persons on Friday
Describing the reports as “misleading and unfounded,” the Senator said his office immediately launched an investigation upon seeing the distressing headlines, only to discover that no such tragedy occurred.
“It was important for us to verify the facts and offer assistance if needed,” Ekpenyong stated in a press release. “Thankfully, there were no casualties. The reports making the rounds were fake and have caused needless panic.”
He noted that the claim, which originated from several online platforms and was amplified on social media, spread rapidly without verification, sparking public concern.
“I was deeply shaken when I saw the report. The idea that 17 lives were lost on that stretch of road was horrifying,” he said.
The reports had been published by some online news sites, including Daily Post and CrossRiverWatch, and widely shared across Facebook and other platforms.
Senator Ekpenyong used the opportunity to urge journalists and social media users to confirm the authenticity of sensitive information before publishing, warning of the emotional and psychological toll of spreading unverified claims.
He reassured the public of his continued collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works and contractors on the Calabar-Itu Road project to enhance safety and ensure timely completion.
“The safety of our people remains a top priority. We are working closely with all stakeholders to make sure this project is completed within the stipulated timeframe,” he emphasized.
The Calabar-Itu road is a major transportation link in the South-South region, currently undergoing reconstruction after years of dilapidation and fatal incidents.
