The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Gombe State Council, has praised Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for securing regulatory autonomy for the state’s electricity market.
The union described the development as a major milestone that will strengthen power supply and boost economic activities across Gombe State.
In a statement signed by the NUJ State Chairman, Faruk Mu’azu Gombe, and made available to journalists, the union said the formal transfer of electricity regulatory oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the Gombe State Electricity Regulatory Commission (GOSERC) marks a historic step toward energy independence.
According to the statement, the achievement reflects the governor’s visionary leadership and strong commitment to taking advantage of the amended constitution and the Electricity Act 2023 to improve the state’s power sector.
The NUJ noted that by meeting all statutory requirements and engaging relevant federal authorities, Gombe State has joined other progressive states now managing their intrastate electricity markets.
The union expressed optimism that the reform would attract private sector investment, allow the state to design electricity tariffs that suit local needs, and expand access to reliable power for homes, businesses, and industries.
“This bold move decentralises power sector governance and positions Gombe for improved service delivery and inclusive economic growth,” the statement said.
The NUJ also welcomed the establishment of GOSERC and the planned incorporation of the Jos Electricity Distribution SubCo (JED SubCo), describing both as signs of a new era of tailored regulation and better electricity services in the state.
The union assured the state government of its full support and called on all stakeholders to work together to ensure the success of the reform.
It also urged GOSERC to maintain high standards of transparency, professionalism, and independence in carrying out its responsibilities.
“As journalists, we remain committed to informing the public, promoting accountability, and amplifying the voices of citizens as Gombe begins this new chapter in its energy sector,” the statement added.
The SUMMIT POST Reports that the executive governor of Gombe State had earlier announced the appointment of former spokesman of NERC, Dr Usman ABBA Arabi as the pioneer chairman of the state’s electricity commission following its establishment.
Consequently, the NERC announced an order transferring regulatory oversight of the electricity market in Gombe State from the Commission to the Gombe State Electricity Regulatory Commission (GOSERC), a significant step in the decentralisation of Nigeria’s electricity sector in line with the Electricity Act’s 2013 that empowers states to regulate their intrastate electricity markets.
