Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has alleged that criminal gangs operating in the state are being strengthened by local collaborators who recruit outsiders to carry out kidnapping operations and share in ransom proceeds.
Speaking on Wednesday at the 2026 Ministers’ Conference organised by the Edo State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Benin City, the governor said insecurity in the state remains a serious concern but is often exaggerated for political reasons.
He explained that intelligence reports sometimes prompt swift security responses, citing a recent incident along Sapele Road where operatives were deployed after reports of criminal activity, only for it to be later confirmed that no incident had occurred.
According to him, some residents now collaborate with criminal groups by arranging kidnappings and handing victims over to armed gangs in remote locations.
Okpebholo also alleged that proceeds from such crimes are used to fund lavish lifestyles, adding that some perpetrators disguise their wealth under the claim of being “Yahoo Boys.”
He warned against interference in criminal cases, urging religious leaders to avoid pleading on behalf of suspects arrested for kidnapping or related offences.
The governor maintained that while Edo State is not completely free of security challenges, the situation is not as severe as portrayed by critics.
He further assured residents that security agencies are actively working to prevent criminal elements from gaining ground in the state.
Okpebholo also called for prayers for President Bola Tinubu, noting that despite the hardship caused by fuel subsidy removal, the policy has contributed to visible development efforts in Edo State.
