The traditional ruler of Okeoro Community in Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State, Oba Olanrewaju Adeyemi, has urged the state government to prioritise infrastructural development in the town, particularly road construction and the establishment of higher institutions.
The monarch made the appeal shortly after receiving his staff of office and instrument of appointment from Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Friday.
According to Oba Adeyemi, poor road infrastructure remains one of the major challenges facing the community, affecting movement, communication and economic activities. He stressed that improved road networks would significantly enhance the quality of life for residents and open up the area for greater development.
He also called for the siting of tertiary institutions in the community, expressing confidence that Okeoro could host a university within the next decade if the necessary support and investments were provided.
The monarch noted that the community is endowed with vast land and abundant mineral resources but lacks the infrastructure needed to unlock its economic potential. He disclosed that Governor Aiyedatiwa had assured him of government support and expressed optimism that the promises would be fulfilled.
On security concerns, Oba Adeyemi stated that peaceful herders conducting legitimate activities should be allowed to coexist with residents. However, he maintained that individuals involved in violence, criminality or unlawful occupation of land should be treated as terrorists and dealt with accordingly.
Presenting the staff of office, Governor Aiyedatiwa explained that the recognition of the Okeoro stool followed requests from the community and a court judgment delivered in July 2023 directing the government to formally recognise the settlement.
The governor said his administration’s decision was in line with its commitment to the rule of law and constitutional governance.
He also cautioned traditional rulers across the state against encroaching on territories outside their jurisdictions through the installation of chiefs, warning that the government would not tolerate such practices.
Aiyedatiwa assured residents that adequate measures would be taken to maintain peace and security within the community.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Chairman of Akoko North-West Local Government Area, Esan Owolabi, described the event as a historic milestone for Okeoro. He urged the monarch to provide selfless leadership and work towards the progress of the community.
Owolabi also called on residents to support the new traditional ruler and remain vigilant in safeguarding the security and development of the area.
