The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has stated that under the leadership of Engr Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz as the managing director and Chief executive officer (MD/CEO) the company has recorded unprecedented visible progress in innovations and project delivery.
According to a statement of scorecard presented to the media, among the achievements too numerous to exhaust in this piece, the launch of an ambitious digital transformation initiative through a strategic framework known as the Nigerian Electricity Grid Maintenance, Expansion, and Rehabilitation Program (NEGMERP) has enabled the implementation of numerous capital and reinforcement projects across various transmission regions, thereby strengthening the grid for efficient electricity evacuation and transmission.
The statement highlighted that TCN had successfully completed several substations, initiated the re-conductoring of aging and low-capacity transmission lines, replaced aged transformers with new ones, and upgraded the capacities of existing transformers.
In addition, multiple system generation peaks were recorded, including an all-time peak of 5,802 MW. Remarkably, for a period spanning 421 days from 20th July in 2022 to 13th of September, 2023, the national grid did not experience any collapse.
And to enhance efficiency and effectiveness, TCN said it embraced digital transformation through the utilisation of internal solutions and vendor-procured applications, a transformation which, prior to the unbundling of TCN last year, encompassed the upgrade of the TCN web portal, NSONG, to achieve transparency and facilitate the exchange of information critical to market operations.
To address the crucial need for grid visibility, TCN said its engineers developed an in-house solution leveraging the “Internet of Things” (IoT) to obtain near real-time data from generators and substations. This was also done before the unbundling of the company.
According to it, the solution significantly improved grid visibility, with all generators and a substantial number of substations becoming visible to the Grid Controllers at the National Control Centre (NCC).
In addition, the Engr Abdulaziz-led management team signed a contract for a new Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition System/Energy Management System (SCADA/EMS) and communication systems upgrade, replacing the outdated NEPA-era system.
TCN said as it awaits the full implementation of the advanced SCADA/EMS network, it recognised the value of small-scale solutions that yield impactful results.
Also according to the transmission company is automating and digitising all its processes in alignment with the organisation’s corporate goals and had implemented various digitalization projects.
It places emphasis on maintaining equipment and infrastructure in a timely manner through proactive maintenance practices and the procurement of necessary spare parts, ensuring the reliability and efficiency of its operations. This commitment to regular maintenance helps prevent disruptions, enhances system performance, and reinforces TCN’s reputation as a dependable transmission service provider.
It explained further that in recognition of the importance of a conducive workplace in motivating employees to perform at their best, the current management had undertaken initiatives to ensure that the work environment supports productivity and promotes a holistic approach to work, fostering a productive and compassionate work culture.
Renovation projects have been carried out to improve office complexes, and modern facilities have been constructed in locations such as Aja – Lagos State, Kano – Kano State, Abuja – FCT, Ihovbor – Edo State, Owerri- Imo State, and Uyo – Akwa Ibom State, among others.
These efforts TCN said reflect the management’s understanding that a well-designed and comfortable workspace positively impacts employee performance.
It added that to physical improvements, the company values the importance of having skilled and knowledgeable staff and has continued to invest in continuous training and development programmes for its employees.
By equipping staff with the necessary expertise and keeping them updated on industry advancements, TCN ensures that its workforce remains competent and capable of effectively fulfilling their job functions.
This commitment to ongoing learning contributes to a highly skilled workforce that can efficiently address operational challenges and drive innovation within the organisation.
TCN said it understands the significance of fostering harmonious relationships with other stakeholders in the electricity sector and has therefore enhanced collaboration and cooperation with government agencies, power generation companies, distribution companies, and regulatory bodies.
These partnerships are essential for seamless grid operations and the achievement of shared objectives. By promoting open communication channels and actively engaging with stakeholders, TCN effectively coordinate efforts, resolve issues, and align strategies to ensure the reliable transmission of bulk electricity across the country.
Also, in line with promoting effective communication in the fight against equipment vandalism, the company, under the current leadership, said it has continued to convene sensitisation programmes in various host communities of transmission installations nationwide to ensure the buy-in of community members.
The company is also actively collaborating with state governments and security operatives, a move the company has been very impactful.
“Through the collective efforts of its leadership, the company has demonstrated a strong commitment to project delivery, digital transformation, and the creation of a positive work environment. These accomplishments position TCN for continued growth and improved performance in the transmission of bulk power across Nigeria.
“Equally, TCN’s dedication to fostering a conducive working environment and maintaining harmonious relationships with stakeholders serves as a solid foundation for sustained progress and success.
“By prioritising employee well-being, investing in professional development, and nurturing collaborative partnerships, TCN aims to further solidify its role as Nigeria’s sole Transmission Service Provider, committed to delivering reliable and efficient bulk power transmission nationwide,” the statement read in part.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is the sole bulk transporter of electricity in the nation’s power sector, established by the electric power sector reform laws, and serves as the nexus between the electricity generators and the distributors in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI), with the mandate to ensure the efficient bulk transmission of electricity to distribution load centres, as well as to carry out System Operations and Market Operations.
