Osun Election: Politicians Must Avoid Violence, Afenifere Leader Warns

The Lagos State chairman of the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Chief Deji Wellington, has called on politicians in Osun State to prioritise peace ahead of the August 15 governorship election, stressing that no political ambition is worth the loss of lives.

‎

‎Wellington made the appeal on Sunday during an interview while reacting to the rising tension surrounding the election. He warned political actors against actions that could trigger violence, noting that elections are temporary while lives lost cannot be recovered.

‎

‎“No politician needs bloodshed to win an election. Elections will come and go, but lives lost cannot be restored,” he said.

‎

‎The Afenifere chieftain urged candidates and supporters across party lines to conduct peaceful campaigns and respect the rule of law.

‎

‎He also appealed to security agencies, particularly the police, to maintain neutrality and carry out their duties fairly before, during, and after the election.

‎

‎“I appeal to the police to remain neutral and perform their constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property. When security agencies are seen as taking sides, the situation becomes worse,” Wellington stated.

‎

‎He emphasised that democracy allows citizens to decide their leaders through elections, urging voters to use their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) rather than resorting to violence.

‎

‎“My appeal is simple: let everyone campaign peacefully. If you want change, go to the polls with your PVC and vote. Governments should be changed through the ballot, not through violence or weapons,” he added.

‎

‎Wellington further expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu would support efforts to ensure a peaceful election in Osun State, describing him as a leader committed to democratic values.

‎

‎He urged security agencies to act professionally and ensure that the governorship election is conducted in a peaceful atmosphere.

‎

‎The call comes amid growing concerns over political clashes and reported incidents of violence in Osun State ahead of the August 15 governorship poll.
