Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has called on the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) to intensify efforts in developing more competent financial professionals who can strengthen transparency, accountability, and sound public financial management.
The governor gave the charge on Tuesday during the commissioning of the newly built ICAN Calabar and District Society secretariat in Calabar. He was represented at the event by his deputy, Peter Odey.
Describing the development as a significant milestone, Otu noted that the Calabar District Society—established over six decades ago as the second ICAN district after Lagos—had operated without a permanent secretariat since inception.
He expressed satisfaction that the long-awaited facility had finally been delivered, commending the Accountant-General and all stakeholders involved in making the project a reality.
According to him, his administration remains committed to supporting professional bodies and institutions that promote capacity building, institutional growth, and human capital development across Cross River State.
The governor further stressed the importance of increasing the number of chartered accountants in the state, arguing that a stronger pool of ICAN professionals would enhance financial discipline in governance and improve record-keeping in public service.
He added that the new secretariat should function not only as an administrative office but also as a centre for mentorship, training, and continuous professional development, with hopes that it could eventually support an ICAN examination centre in Calabar.
Speaking on behalf of the ICAN leadership, the President and Chairman of Council, Mallam Haruna Nma Yahaya, described the project as the result of years of dedication, collaboration, and shared vision within the profession. He said the facility represents a lasting legacy for accountants in Cross River State and a platform for advancing professionalism and innovation.
In her remarks, the Chairperson of ICAN Calabar and District Society, Dr. Mrs. Glory Tony Effiong, said the completion of the secretariat fulfilled a long-standing aspiration of the district. She described it as the defining achievement of her tenure and appreciated Governor Otu for his support, alongside members and partners who contributed to the project’s success.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Project Development Committee, Elder Nicolas Dan, described the new secretariat as a historic breakthrough for ICAN members in the state, noting that it signals a new phase of growth after many years without a permanent base.
