The Oyo State Government has announced Tuesday, June 16, 2026, as a work-free day in commemoration of the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who explained that the decision was taken to recognise the significance of the Hijrah in Islamic history and in the lives of Muslim faithful.
He noted that the Hijrah marks the migration of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Mecca to Medina in 622AD, describing it as a major milestone in the Islamic calendar.
According to the statement, the declaration is a gesture of solidarity with the Muslim community in the state and beyond.
“As a mark of respect and in recognition of the importance of this occasion, the government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day in Oyo State,” Oyelade stated.
He urged residents to use the public holiday to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in Oyo State and Nigeria at large.
The commissioner further encouraged citizens to reflect on the values of the Hijrah, emphasizing the importance of togetherness, faith, and communal harmony.
“The Hijrah is a period for reflection, prayers, and strengthening of community bonds. We encourage everyone to use this occasion to pray for the well-being of our state and nation,” he added.
