Pharmacists to Tackle Tax Reforms, Drug Hawking at Calabar Summit

By Abasi Ita

The Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN), Cross River State Branch, has announced plans for its Business Summit 2026, with key discussions expected to focus on the impact of new tax reforms and the rising menace of drug hawking in the state and the country at large.

The summit, themed “Tax Reforms: Impact on Community Pharmacy Practice,” is scheduled to hold on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at Marian Hotel, Calabar.

State Chairman of the association, Pharmacist Iyke Okafor, said the event comes at a critical time following recent fiscal changes that have increased the cost of pharmaceutical products and affected healthcare delivery.

He noted that the new tax regime, alongside rising operational costs, has placed pressure on community pharmacists while also creating conditions that encourage the circulation of fake and substandard drugs.

Okafor also expressed concern over the activities of drug hawkers, who he said openly sell syrups, tablets, and capsules in motor parks, public spaces, and vehicles without proper regulation or dosage guidance.

“We have valid reports that many of the drugs and herbal products sold in motor parks and public spaces have worsened the health conditions of our people and increased complications,” he said.

He warned that the combination of rising drug prices and weak enforcement has heightened public health risks, especially across communities in the country.

The association said the summit will provide a platform for stakeholders to deliberate on solutions to challenges posed by tax reforms, drug distribution, and regulatory compliance.

A key session will focus on “Minimizing Tax Liabilities through Documentation and Compliance,” with experts expected to guide participants on tax thresholds, VAT obligations, digital invoicing, and audit preparedness.

The summit will also examine how pharmacists can remain compliant under the new tax framework while sustaining business operations.

The chief host of the summit is the National Chairman of ACPN, Pharm. Chief Ambrose Igwekamma Ezeh. The event is expected to bring together pharmacists from across the state and beyond for policy engagement and professional collaboration.
