Police Urge Calm Over Reported Xenophobic Attacks in S’Africa, Warn Against Reprisal Violence in Nigeria

The Jigawa State Police Command has thwarted a planned kidnapping operation along the Jigawa–Bauchi border and arrested two suspects linked to the scheme.

This was disclosed in a statement issued in Dutse on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam.

According to the statement, the operation was uncovered on 23 May 2026 following intelligence-led policing that exposed a criminal network allegedly planning to abduct residents in the area. The suspects were identified as 55-year-old Adamu Gari of Zabo Kafi village in Kafin Hausa LGA and 40-year-old Abdullahi Adamu from Fatiske village in Jama’are LGA, Bauchi State.

Investigations revealed that the suspects, alongside other accomplices, were allegedly responsible for the abduction of two individuals in Jama’are town. However, police said both men were arrested in their respective communities before the plot could be executed.

The command noted that the suspects are currently assisting investigators, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing members of the syndicate.

In a wider security update, SP Adam said the command recorded several arrests across the state in the past week involving kidnapping, armed robbery, theft, and cattle rustling.

On 22 May, operatives of the State Intelligence Department reportedly arrested three suspected armed robbers in Hadejia Emirate. The suspects were named as Musa (alias Kala), 45; Manu Abdullahi, 30; and Yusuf Ibrahim, 35. A fabricated AK-47 rifle was later recovered from Yusuf Ibrahim’s residence.

In another operation on 23 May at about 5:24 a.m., police in Gwaram Division arrested two suspects, Mustapha Badamasi and Khalid Zubairu, for alleged theft of sheep and a motorcycle believed to have been used in criminal activities. The stolen animals were recovered.

Later that same day, operatives in Taura Division apprehended two suspected cattle rustlers, Sulaiman Isa and Ibrahim Muhammad, found in possession of four stolen sheep. The suspects have since been charged to court.

The police also confirmed the dismantling of a robbery gang operating an illegal roadblock along the Ringim–Chaichai Road on 26 May. One suspect was arrested at the scene, while two others were later tracked and apprehended.

Additionally, the command reported the recovery of stolen motorcycles in separate operations carried out between 27 and 29 May in Dutse and surrounding communities.

Commending officers for their efforts, the Commissioner of Police reiterated the command’s commitment to sustaining the fight against crime and ensuring the protection of lives and property across Jigawa State.

He also urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to support ongoing security operations.
