Pope Francis made a surprise public appearance at the Vatican, praying for peace in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gaza, and other conflict zones.
The 88-year-old pontiff, who recently spent time in the hospital for pneumonia treatment, was seen mingling with the crowd in St. Peter’s Square.
“Let the weapons fall silent and dialogue begin,” Pope Francis urged, specifically mentioning the need for peace in Gaza, where Israel’s ground offensive against Hamas has left people struggling to access basic necessities like shelter, food, and clean water.
The Pope’s prayer extended beyond Gaza, encompassing Sudan, South Sudan, Ukraine, and Myanmar, where ongoing conflicts have caused immense human suffering.
He expressed concern for the millions facing famine in Sudan, emphasizing the need for international leaders to prioritize humanitarian aid and seek a peaceful resolution.
“I invite everyone to pray for Sudan, where the war has yet to find a peaceful solution,” Pope Francis said. “May weapons be silenced, and may Sudanese refugees find welcome and protection in neighboring countries.”
Pope Francis’s surprise appearance came after a period of convalescence following his hospitalization for pneumonia. According to his doctors, the pontiff almost died twice during his hospital stay, sparking speculation about his future plans.
“He’s doing better, that’s clear, and he wants that to be seen,” a Vatican source revealed. Despite his health challenges, Pope Francis remains committed to his mission, using his public appearances to convey messages of peace and compassion.
