The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in Nigeria, Mr. Cui Jianchun, announced that China has successfully lifted 700 million individuals out of extreme poverty, accounting for 70% of its total population of 1.4 billion.
This significant achievement was disclosed during a reception held to commemorate the 74th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
In his welcome address, the Ambassador emphasized the importance of celebrating China’s accomplishments and the strong friendship between China and Nigeria, which is built on the principles of mutual cooperation and shared prosperity.
Furthermore, the Ambassador assured that China will continue to enhance its bilateral relationship with Nigeria, aligning with the 5G Goal of Political Consonance, Economic Cooperation, Military Collaboration, International Coordination, and People Communication.
Hon. Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, also highlighted the fruitful relationship between China and Nigeria, particularly in areas such as infrastructure development, trade, technology transfer, economic growth, and cultural exchanges. Kalu acknowledged China’s substantial contributions to Nigeria’s infrastructural development, citing projects like the Abuja-Kaduna Railway and the Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Project as examples of the enduring collaboration between the two nations.
These initiatives have not only improved connectivity within Nigeria but have also laid the foundation for sustainable economic growth. In terms of commerce, the bilateral trade between China and Nigeria has flourished, creating new opportunities for both countries. Chinese products have become increasingly popular in Nigerian households, while Nigeria’s agricultural exports to China continue to grow. As a result, this symbiotic relationship has generated employment, boosted local industries, and improved the welfare of the people.
Currently, China is Nigeria’s largest source of imports, and Nigeria is China’s second-largest trading partner in Africa. The event featured various performances, including traditional Chinese music, acrobatics, and magic displays, providing guests with a cultural experience. It is worth noting that the People’s Republic of China was established on October 1, 1949, by Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong, while diplomatic relations between Nigeria and China were formally established in 1971
