World Press Freedom Day: Otu Hails Journalists as Defenders of Democracy

By Abasi Ita

Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has paid tribute to journalists in Cross River State and across Nigeria for their commitment to truth, professionalism and democratic ideals as the world marked World Press Freedom Day.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Linus Obogo, the governor described journalists as courageous guardians of truth whose work continues to strengthen democratic institutions and shape society positively.

Felicitating members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, Otu praised media practitioners for their dedication to informing the public and defending liberty.

“I warmly salute journalists whose courageous pens illuminate truth, defend liberty, and deepen the foundations of democracy, guiding society with vigilance, integrity and unyielding purpose,” the governor stated.

He noted that the media remains one of democracy’s strongest pillars, stressing that journalists play a critical role in amplifying the voices of ordinary citizens and ensuring accountability in governance.

According to him, the profession remains one of democracy’s finest institutions because it gives voice to the voiceless, shapes enlightened public discourse and preserves society’s collective conscience through fearless and professional reporting.

Governor Otu also acknowledged the sacrifices journalists make daily in pursuit of truth, often under difficult conditions, describing their resilience as essential to the survival of democratic society.

“The press stands as the living conscience of society, fearlessly speaking truth, enlightening the public mind, and strengthening the bonds between leadership and the people,” he said.

The governor further stated that beyond reporting events, journalists serve as moral watchdogs whose work promotes civic responsibility, transparency, justice and national unity.

He added that Cross River State remains proud of the contributions of journalists in documenting development, scrutinising institutions and helping to build a more accountable society.

“Today, Cross River proudly celebrates your immense contributions and stands in admiration of your service to humanity, democracy and national development,” he added.

Otu reaffirmed his administration’s respect for press freedom and urged journalists to remain committed to truth, fairness and responsible reportage.

“As we honour this special day, we celebrate not only the freedom of the press, but the courage, honour and public spirit of those whose words continue to light the path of democracy for generations to come,” the governor stated.
