Former England international Raheem Sterling has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving following a road incident involving his Lamborghini on the M3 motorway in Hampshire.
The 31-year-old winger, who most recently had a short spell with Feyenoord in the Dutch Eredivisie, was detained on Thursday morning after reports that his vehicle had collided with motorway barriers near the Minley Interchange. He has since been released on bail while investigations continue.
According to Hampshire Police, officers received a call just before 9am reporting that a Lamborghini had struck barriers on the southbound carriageway of the M3. Authorities confirmed that no other vehicles were involved and no injuries were recorded.
In a statement, the police said the driver—a 31-year-old man from Berkshire—was arrested on multiple suspicions, including driving under the influence of drugs, dangerous driving, possession of a Class C substance, and failing to provide a specimen for testing. He was later granted bail pending further enquiries.
A source close to Sterling confirmed the arrest but insisted there was no confirmed evidence that drugs were present in his system. The same source also suggested the player has faced a difficult period in recent years, describing it as an emotionally and professionally challenging phase in his career.
Sterling joined Feyenoord in February on a short-term deal after leaving Chelsea FC, but made only a handful of appearances before the contract expired. His departure from the London club followed a mutual agreement to terminate his deal, reportedly involving a settlement covering the remaining months of his high-value contract.
Despite recent setbacks, Sterling remains one of England’s most decorated modern players. He won multiple Premier League titles during his time at Manchester City after rising through the ranks at Liverpool FC.
On the international stage, he earned over 80 caps for the England national team, with his last appearance coming at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Police say investigations into the incident are still ongoing as they continue to gather evidence surrounding the circumstances of the crash and arrest.
