A heavy rainstorm has left two people dead and destroyed property worth millions of naira in Kirfi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.
The victims, identified as 50-year-old Aisha Sagir and her four-year-old granddaughter, Aisha Shuaibu, were residents of Unguwar Katsinawa in Bara Village, Kirfi. They reportedly lost their lives after the severe weather struck the community on Wednesday morning.
The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, SP Ahmed Wakil Habib.
According to the police, the disaster occurred at about 10:00 a.m. when heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds swept through the area, destroying several houses, killing livestock and damaging other valuable property estimated to be worth millions of naira.
Police officers attached to the Kirfi Division visited the affected community to assess the extent of the destruction and maintain security in the aftermath of the incident.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and residents of Kirfi Local Government Area over the tragic loss.
He assured the public that the police, working alongside relevant agencies, would continue to support emergency response efforts and protect lives and property across the state.
The commissioner also advised residents to remain vigilant throughout the rainy season and to promptly alert security agencies whenever emergencies occur to enable swift intervention.
