The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is making a hard push to poach former APC governorship candidate Nasiru Gawuna, aiming to position him as its flagbearer for the 2027 election.
According to Daily Nigerian, this is no casual flirtation. The ADC has moved beyond preliminary talks and is now deep in consultation with Gawuna’s inner circle. To sweeten the deal, the party has reportedly offered a “political package” that includes automatic nomination tickets for State Assembly and House of Representatives seats for his loyalists.
Crucially, sources confirm that the ADC has guaranteed substantial financial backing for the campaign, addressing what was seen as a weakness in his 2023 bid.
The brokers behind this move are, as narrated by Daily Nigerian, heavyweights: former Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal and ex-Ambassador Faruk Yabo are leading the charge.
This creates a fascinating dilemma. Gawuna has publicly sworn loyalty to the Kwankwasiyya movement. However, insiders say the ADC’s aggressive offer—including the timing—is forcing a “fresh consideration” within his camp. You will recall that the NNPP, led by Rabiu Kwankwaso, recently sidelined Gawuna by anointing Aminu Abdussalam as its preferred candidate. That door has seemingly closed.
The ADC’s desperation is also visible in its internal chaos. The party has yet to declare a winner in its Kano governorship primary between Ibrahim Khalil and Ibrahim Little. Sources say that announcement is being deliberately delayed to keep the ticket open for Gawuna.
If successful, this realignment would reshape Kano politics. Gawuna remains a formidable force with a sizable following. Pairing him with the ADC’s structure—and the hinted financial war chest—would present incumbent Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf with a much tougher challenger than the NNPP’s candidate.
