The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has distanced itself from any protests taking place in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital. The party has also accused the incumbent governor, Yahaya Bello, of being responsible for the unrest.
In a statement released today, the DG New Media, MuriSam Campaign Council/SDP, Isaiah Davies Ijele, said that the party is a peaceful organization that believes in seeking justice through the courts. He said that the protests are being carried out by loyalists of the incumbent governor.
Ijele also accused INEC’s legal head in Lokoja, Mrs. Faith Kotso, of deliberately delaying the party’s forensic experts from accessing electoral materials. He said that this delay has frustrated the party’s efforts to seek redress through the courts.
The SDP is calling on the federal government to intervene and restore order to Kogi State. The party is also urging the Nigerian Army to continue to provide security for the tribunal and INEC facilities.
