A man was shot by US Secret Service agents near the White House late Saturday night after brandishing a firearm during a confrontation.
The suspect was taken to a hospital, but his condition remains unknown.
President Donald Trump was not at the White House at the time, as he was spending the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida. Secret Service officials have not confirmed whether the White House or Trump was a target.
The incident unfolded after local police alerted agents about a potentially suicidal individual traveling from Indiana to Washington. Around midnight, agents located a vehicle matching the suspect’s description near 17th and F Streets, close to the White House.
Shortly after, officers spotted the suspect nearby. As they approached, he pulled out a firearm, prompting agents to open fire. No Secret Service personnel were injured in the encounter.
Authorities are now investigating the shooting, with Washington police leading the inquiry.
