Immediate past Senator who represented Cross River South in the 9th National Assembly, Gershom Bassey, has commended Cross River State Governor, Prince Bassey Otu, for tackling the wave of insecurity that engulfed the state during the previous administration, noting that the improvements have helped restore confidence in governance and boost investments.
Senator Bassey said the once rampant incidents of kidnapping and general insecurity, which bred fear, discouraged investment and restricted movement for residents and visitors, have significantly reduced under the current administration.
He stressed that the protection of lives and property remains the primary responsibility of any government, adding that the Otu administration has recorded commendable achievements in this area.
Speaking during an interaction with journalists in Calabar, the former federal lawmaker also expressed concern over challenges affecting water supply in the state. He attributed the collapse of the Cross River State Water Board to poor policies and administrative lapses of the immediate past administration.
According to him, a previously functional system was dismantled, leading to the loss of confidence among international development partners that had supported water projects in the state.
He urged the present government to rebuild trust with relevant partners, explaining that water infrastructure requires heavy investment and sustained external support to be effective.
On tourism development, Senator Bassey lauded Governor Otu for reviving the sector from what he described as systemic decay inherited from the previous administration. He expressed optimism about the global prospects of Carnival Calabar, describing it as a major platform for showcasing the state’s cultural heritage and economic potential.
Bassey who is the leader of Masta Blasta, one of the leading competing bands in Carnival Calabar revealed plans to expand the Carnival into a global event comparable to internationally renowned festivals such as the Trinidad and Rio Carnivals.
According to him, the vision is to transform Carnival Calabar into a national and global attraction that draws visitors from across Nigeria and beyond, while increasing private sector funding to complement government support.
He expressed confidence that with improved security and strategic planning, Carnival Calabar could evolve into a world class festival capable of attracting millions of visitors annually and boosting the state’s economy.
