Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has cast doubt over his future at the club following Atletico’s UEFA Champions League elimination by Arsenal F.C..
Atletico suffered a 1-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, sealing a 2-1 aggregate loss and extending the club’s wait for silverware to five consecutive seasons.
Speaking after the match, Simeone gave an uncertain response when asked if he still had the motivation to continue as coach.
“Not now, definitely not now,” the Argentine manager said, sparking speculation over his future ahead of the summer.
Simeone, who has spent more than 14 years in charge of Atletico Madrid, has repeatedly faced questions about his future after painful European exits.
Among the toughest moments of his reign were the UEFA Champions League final defeats to rivals Real Madrid CF in 2014 and 2016.
After the 2016 final loss on penalties at the San Siro, Simeone admitted he considered leaving because of the emotional impact on the squad.
Despite guiding Atletico to the La Liga title in 2021, recent seasons have been difficult as the club continues to battle with Spanish giants Real Madrid and FC Barcelona.
Reflecting on Atletico’s progress, Simeone said the club had grown significantly during his time in charge.
“We’ve grown enormously in every aspect. We’re a club recognised in Europe and the world,” he said.
“But the fans want to win. Getting to a semi final isn’t enough.”
Although Simeone has long been viewed as a defensive minded coach, he has insisted this season that his current side attacks better than it defends.
Analysts say the Argentine tactician has gradually adjusted his style, seeking a more expansive approach while maintaining Atletico’s traditional intensity.
Despite falling short in Europe, Atletico recorded some positive moments this season.
The club reached the Copa del Rey final for the first time since winning the competition under Simeone in 2013, although they eventually lost on penalties to Real Sociedad in April.
Several players have also impressed, including Simeone’s son Giuliano Simeone, while Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman has adapted quickly since joining the club in January.
Defender Marc Pubill has equally drawn attention with performances that could earn him a place in Spain’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Atletico’s run to the Champions League semi finals also included an impressive victory over Barcelona in the quarter finals.
The campaign could mark the final European appearances for veteran stars Antoine Griezmann and Koke, whose futures remain uncertain.
Griezmann is reportedly set to join Orlando City SC in Major League Soccer, while Koke’s future at Atletico is yet to be decided.
“I hope our fans give Antoine the backing he’s earned in these last few matches,” Simeone said.
“Koke was incredible, a masterclass in how to play football at his age.”
Atletico are expected to rebuild this summer as they seek to end their trophy drought and return to contention in Spain and Europe.
Whether Simeone will remain in charge for the next phase of the project remains uncertain, although he has previously chosen to stay whenever speculation over his future intensified.
