A 55-year-old Nigerian man was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport in South Africa on suspicion of drug trafficking after arriving from São Paulo, Brazil.
According to South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Van Wyk, the suspect was taken into custody after a medical X-ray revealed multiple swallowed capsules suspected to contain cocaine. The drugs are estimated to be worth R7.5 million.
Authorities confirmed that the man is still in the process of expelling the ingested capsules. He is expected to appear in Kempton Park Magistrates’ Court soon.
South African law enforcement continues its efforts to combat international drug smuggling, with airports being key points of interception for traffickers.
