Benefits of Consuming Sweet Potatoes

By Chisom Ibemere

Sweet potatoes are a versatile root vegetable botanically known as Ipomoea batatas. They are known as one of the staple foods in many parts of the world and are a good source of fibre, potassium, vitamins, and other essential nutrients.

Sweet potatoes are a great source of fibre, which can help in promoting digestive health and reducing the risk of colon and colorectal cancers. The fibre content in sweet potatoes is also helpful in the prevention of constipation and promotion of regularity for a healthy digestive tract.

Sweet potato is loaded with antioxidants such as beta-carotene, which can help in protecting the body from damage caused by free radicals. They may also help to reduce the risk of various types of cancer, including prostate and lung cancer.

Sweet potatoes are great sources of nutrients such as vitamin C, potassium, and beta-carotene, which can help in reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. They have a low glycemic index, which means that they can help in regulating blood sugar levels.

The high vitamin A and C in sweet potatoes can help in strengthening the immune system and fight off infections. It also contains compounds such as anthocyanins, which can help in reducing inflammation in the body.

Beta carotene in sweet potatoes is also known as provitamin, which is converted into active vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A is essential for maintaining good eyesight.

Sweet potatoes are highly beneficial for heart health due to their potassium content, which can help in regulating blood pressure, and also sources of fibre, which can lower cholesterol levels.

Sweet potatoes are rich in compounds such as antioxidants and nutrients as potassium, which can help in improving brain function and reducing the risk of cognitive decline. They have low calories and high fibre content which can help in promoting weight loss by keeping you fuller for longer periods.
