President Bola Tinubu has approved the conversion of the Federal Polytechnic, Kaduna, into the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies, Kaduna.
The development was announced by Daniel Amos, the member representing Jema’a/Sanga Federal Constituency and Chairman of the House Committee on House Services.
Amos said the conversion would create opportunities for more degree programmes, strengthen research and improve technical and vocational education in the country.
The legislation, sponsored by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, repeals the existing law establishing the polytechnic and provides for its transformation into a specialised university.
According to Amos, the new institution is expected to equip students with practical and professional skills needed in the labour market while contributing to Nigeria’s technological and industrial development.
He commended Abbas for sponsoring the bill, describing the Speaker’s involvement as a demonstration of commitment to educational advancement and national development.
Amos also thanked Tinubu for assenting to the legislation, alongside another bill establishing the Federal University of Technology and Vocational Studies in Yaba, Lagos.
He said the approvals aligned with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly its focus on educational reform and human capital development.
The lawmaker congratulated the people of Kaduna State, as well as the management, staff and students of the former polytechnic, on the institution’s elevation.
He expressed hope that the university would widen access to higher education and strengthen technical and vocational training in Kaduna and neighbouring communities.
