Tinubu Mourns Oyo Teacher, Orders Intensified Rescue of Abducted Pupils

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, assuring Nigerians that efforts are underway to secure their safe return.

In a statement issued on Monday, the President condemned the attack on communities in Esiele and Yawota, describing it as heartbreaking and unacceptable, especially when it involves schoolchildren.

Tinubu said no child should ever be taken from the safety of a classroom, adding that no family should be forced to endure the pain and uncertainty caused by such incidents.

He also extended condolences to the family of a teacher killed during the attack, Mrs. Oyedokun, widow of Michael Oyedokun, who was reportedly beheaded by armed assailants. The President described her as a victim whose memory and sacrifice would not be forgotten, assuring that her family would receive support.

According to him, rescue operations are ongoing and will continue through coordinated intelligence efforts, combining both military and non-military approaches to ensure the abducted victims are brought back safely.

He explained that all available lawful measures are being deployed to secure the release of the students and teachers, while stressing that operations are being carefully planned and sustained.

The President also confirmed that a high-level federal delegation had previously visited the affected communities following the incident, which occurred on May 15, 2026. The team included top security and government officials such as the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, the Minister of Defence, and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

Tinubu further disclosed that additional security reinforcements have been approved for the area, including the deployment of a specialised rescue unit and the mobilisation of 1,000 forest guards in partnership with the Oyo State Government to improve surveillance in forest regions used by armed groups.

He added that plans for a permanent military presence in the affected area are also under urgent consideration as part of broader efforts to strengthen security.
