The Togolese government has presented its country report at the ongoing Sixth Legislature First Ordinary Session of the Year 2024 to the ECOWAS Parliament, highlighting its efforts to promote gender equality, protect human rights, and strengthen economic development.
According to the report read by SOKLINGBE Sénou, Togo has made significant progress in promoting gender equality, with a Togolese woman occupying the post of Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament for the first time in history. The government has also established policies and legislation to ensure strategic alignment with the Supplementary Act on Gender Equality for Sustainable Development in ECOWAS.
In terms of human rights, the report notes that Togo has strengthened its national human rights institutions, including the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) and the High Authority for Audiovisual and Communication (HAAC). The government has also submitted regular reports to the Human Rights Council and treaty bodies, and has been commended on its progress in implementing recommendations made in previous reports.
On economic development, the report highlights Togo’s efforts to improve its economic governance framework, including the digitalization of basic social services and the administration. The government has also implemented measures to strengthen the prevention, protection, and guarantee of human rights, and has made significant progress in implementing the recommendations made in previous reports.
The report also notes that Togo has continued to improve its political governance framework, including the revision of its constitution, which has established an original parliamentary system with a bicephalous executive.
Overall, the report demonstrates Togo’s commitment to promoting gender equality, protecting human rights, and strengthening economic development, and highlights the progress made in these areas.
“We commend the Togolese government for all the reforms it has carried out and those it is currently implementing, as well as all the measures it has taken to strengthen the prevention, protection, and guarantee of human rights in our country,” the report states.
