FIFA president Gianni Infantino has revealed that the United States President Donald Trump will attend the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at MetLife Stadium on July 19.
Mr Infantino confirmed the decision in an interview with Fox News on Tuesday. He also stated that he and Mr Trump would jointly present the World Cup trophy to the tournament winners that day.
“We will be together with the president, enjoying the final, and handing the trophy to the winner, of course, together,” Mr Infantino said. “We are together all the time.”
Mr Trump has yet to attend any World Cup match, but other members of his administration, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have attended the tournament. He was in attendance for the United States’ 4-1 win over Paraguay in their opener.
Mr Trump is often met with loud boos whenever he attends sports events. He was recently jeered loudly by fans when he appeared at Game 3 of the 2026 NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden.
Mr Trump was also booed loudly by the New Jersey crowd when he took the stage during the trophy presentation at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
After presenting the trophy to the winners, Chelsea, he remained on the podium, prompting captain Reece James to appear and ask if he was going to leave.
“They told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage, and I thought that he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay,” Mr James said after the event.
