The Ukomu Igala Organization (UIO) has expressed deep sadness and concern over the recent violent clashes between farmers and herdsmen in Ejule-Ojebe town, Ibaji Local Government Area of Kogi State, which have resulted in loss of lives, missing persons, and widespread destruction of farmlands, crops, and cattle.
In a press release signed by Maj. Gen. James A. Ataguba (Rtd), Ph.D, National Leader of UIO, the organization extended its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and called on all parties involved to immediately lay down their arms and embrace peace.
“We sympathize with all families affected by this tragic incident and call on all parties to immediately lay down their arms and embrace peace,” Ataguba said. “We urgently appeal to the Kogi State Government to intervene without delay to prevent further bloodshed.”
The UIO also called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to act swiftly to restore law and order and prevent reprisal attacks. “The situation is tense, and we fear that if not checked, it could escalate into a full-blown crisis,” Ataguba warned.
According to the UIO, Ibaji Local Government Area continues to suffer from deep socio-economic challenges, worsened by years of neglect, lack of infrastructure, and environmental degradation affecting farming and fishing livelihoods. “These conditions have fueled repeated communal tensions in the area,” Ataguba said.
The organization emphasized that the recurring conflicts between farmers and herders in the region are a symptom of a larger problem, which requires a comprehensive and sustainable solution. “It’s time for the government to take concrete steps to address the root causes of these conflicts, including issues related to land use, grazing reserves, and environmental degradation,” Ataguba urged.
The UIO also called on residents of Ejule-Ojebe town and surrounding communities to remain calm, vigilant, and cooperate with security agencies by reporting any suspicious activities. “We must work together to restore peace and stability to our community,” Ataguba said.
The organization also commended the efforts of security agencies working to restore peace in the area and assured them of its full support.
The UIO’s appeal comes as tensions remain high in the affected area, with fears of reprisal attacks and further violence. The organization has called on the international community, including humanitarian organizations and human rights groups, to support efforts to restore peace and stability in the region.
