The University of Calabar will host the 28th edition of the Nigeria Universities Games Association (NUGA) Games from November 14 to 24, 2026.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Offiong E. Offiong, announced this during a media briefing convened to unveil preparations for the prestigious inter university sporting event.
Describing the event as a landmark opportunity for the institution, Prof. Offiong said the games would showcase the university’s commitment to academic and sporting excellence while promoting unity among Nigerian universities.
”This event is more than a series of sporting competitions. It is an extraordinary opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to excellence, foster unity among universities and celebrate the vibrant spirit of our youth,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor expressed confidence in the university’s readiness to host athletes, officials and spectators from within and outside Nigeria.
”The University of Calabar is ready and willing to welcome athletes, officials and spectators from across Nigeria and beyond. We are committed to delivering an unforgettable experience that reflects the values of fair play, respect and sportsmanship for which NUGA is known,” he stated.
Prof. Offiong acknowledged the support of the Cross River State Government, describing it as a critical partner in the successful hosting of the games.
According to him, the university will work closely with government agencies, corporate organisations, political office holders, the media and its Alumni Association to ensure the success of the event.
”We are committed and determined to host a colourful and spectacular NUGA sporting fiesta. More than 50,000 athletes, officials and supporters from about 70 federal, state and private universities are expected in Calabar for the games,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor called on stakeholders to support the initiative through funding, logistics, technical expertise and publicity, noting that collective efforts would help create a lasting legacy for future generations.
”We invite all stakeholders to be part of this vision. Every contribution, whether financial, logistical, advisory or promotional, will play an important role in making these games a resounding success,” he added.
Prof. Offiong also highlighted the role of the media in promoting the games and mobilising public interest ahead of the competition.
”The media remains the voice of our community. Beyond reporting the event, it has a vital role in building enthusiasm and rallying support for what promises to be a memorable sporting festival,” he said.
According to him, hosting NUGA 2026 will serve as a catalyst for the development of modern sports infrastructure within the university, including world class facilities that will benefit students and the wider community long after the event.
”As we embrace the honour of hosting NUGA 2026, we envision the games as a catalyst for the development of modern and durable sports facilities on our campus. This is an investment in the future and in a new generation of athletes who will excel nationally and internationally,” he said.
The Vice Chancellor further appealed to the NUGA Council for continued cooperation and support as preparations gather momentum.
He expressed appreciation to stakeholders for their support and urged them to join the university in making the 2026 NUGA Games a success.
”We will be ready to welcome the world in November 2026 for a celebration of talent, determination and unity. Together, we can create a legacy that will strengthen university sports in Nigeria for years to come,” Prof. Offiong said.
